TECHNICAL TIPS
GC Inlet Liners and Dimensions

Will instruments using the same inlet liner dimensions give the same injection results?

Instruments using the same type and size of liner will give very similar results, but different makes of inlet can have different temperature profiles within the inlet, or need somewhat different gas flows for the septum purge, etc. when transferring methods between different instruments.

Will instruments using the same liner style with different dimensions give the same injection results?

They may for some injections, as long as the conditions are in the middle of the liner’s operating envelope. One of the largest concerns can be back-flash (the vapour cloud created by a liquid injection exceeding the available liner volume) or dilution by carrier. A GC with a smaller inlet is more prone to back-flash, but has less dilution; a larger inlet port gives the opposite effect.
